Stair nosings
Slip-resistant, luminance-contrasting stair nosings supplied and installed to AS 1428.1. Internal and external stairs, new and existing.
Where they are used
Every stair on an accessible path of travel: entry stairs, fire stairs, lecture theatres, grandstands, mezzanines, external steps and landscaped stairs. Required on new work, and the most frequently missed item on existing stairs.
What is supplied
| Profiles | Surface-fixed, recessed for wet-laid finishes, and wrap-around for open treads |
| Materials | Aluminium with a slip-resistant insert, solid polyurethane, brass and stainless for heritage and high-wear settings |
| Contrast strip | A contrasting strip across the full width of the tread at the nosing, in the depth the standard requires, selected against the tread finish |
| Slip resistance | Inserts selected to the slip rating the location calls for, wet or dry |
| Substrates | Concrete, tile, stone, timber, steel, carpet |
| Finish | Mill, anodised or powder coated to a nominated colour |
Installation
Treads measured and each nosing cut to length. Surface-fixed profiles are drilled and mechanically fixed, with adhesive where the substrate requires it. Recessed profiles are set into the tread before the finish goes down. Existing nosings that have lost their contrast or their slip resistance are removed, the tread made good, and the replacement fixed.
Installation on operating buildings, one flight at a time, so a stair stays usable.
Rectification
Nosings fail inspection for contrast more often than for anything else: the strip is there but does not contrast with the tread, or it contrasts on a dry day and disappears on a wet one. Send the surveyor's item or a photograph of the stair and it is priced the same day.
Documentation and handover
Product data, the contrast selection against the tread finish, and photographs, supplied for the building surveyor, access consultant or asset register. Certification and sign-off remain with the surveyor. Installation carries a 24 month workmanship guarantee.
