Working with occupational therapists
Most residential work begins with an occupational therapist's assessment and a date: a hospital discharge, a plan approval, a change in someone's mobility. From the assessment, or from photographs and measurements, an indicative price is returned within one business day and a site inspection is arranged where the site needs one. The OT's recommendation is followed as written; where a site constraint means it cannot be, the constraint is raised with the OT rather than changed on site.
What is delivered
- Access ramps. Freestanding modular aluminium systems for front, side and rear entries, installed in a day for most straight runs, with no concrete and nothing fixed to the house. Suits rented homes, temporary need, and anyone who may move. Timber and composite where a period home calls for it.
- Hire. The same ramp systems for a temporary need: a discharge, a recovery, a decision still pending. Supplied, installed and collected.
- Threshold ramps for a single step or a raised sill.
- Handrails and grab rails at steps, entries and along paths.
Funding
Ramps and rails for a home can be funded through the NDIS, the Support at Home program for older Australians, the Department of Veterans' Affairs, the Transport Accident Commission and WorkSafe Victoria, or paid privately. Every scheme requires approval before the work, and most require an OT assessment before the approval. How each scheme works, with sources.
Documentation
The OT receives the installation detail with the as-installed gradient and photographs for the client file and the funding body. Installation carries a 24 month workmanship guarantee, with labour covered anywhere in Victoria.
